Post-Operative Care: Ensuring a Smooth Recovery for Your Pet

At Brekke Veterinary Clinic, we know that having your pet undergo surgery—whether routine or complex—can be a stressful experience. You want to do everything possible to help them recover comfortably and quickly. Proper post-operative care is key to a smooth healing process, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Creating a Calm and Comfortable Recovery Space

After surgery, your pet will need a quiet, comfortable space to rest. Whether you’re setting up a cozy bed in the corner of your living room or a designated recovery area in a separate room, be sure it’s free from loud noises and excessive foot traffic. If you have other pets, it may be best to keep them separated for a few days to prevent any accidental jostling or rough play.

Managing Pain and Medication

Your pet may be prescribed pain medication or antibiotics after surgery. It’s essential to follow dosing instructions carefully and complete the full course of any prescribed antibiotics. If you notice signs of discomfort—such as whining, excessive panting, or restlessness—contact us right away.

We also recommend keeping a written schedule for medication times, especially in the first few days when your pet might be groggy or less active than usual. If your pet has trouble taking pills, we’re happy to provide tips or alternative options to make it easier.

Monitoring the Surgical Site

Checking your pet’s incision daily is one of the most important parts of post-op care. Look for signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, which could indicate an infection. Some mild bruising and slight swelling are normal, but if you see excessive redness, heat, or an unpleasant odor, call us immediately.

It’s also crucial to prevent your pet from licking or chewing at their incision. While the “cone of shame” may not be their favorite accessory, it’s often necessary to keep them from irritating the wound. If your pet is especially determined to get to their stitches, let us know—we can recommend alternative solutions, such as medical pet shirts or inflatable collars.

Encouraging Safe and Controlled Activity

It’s no secret that many pets in Castle Rock are active and love to run, jump, and play—especially our energetic dogs who enjoy the trails and open spaces. However, after surgery, limiting activity is crucial to a full recovery. Sudden movements or strenuous exercise can reopen incisions or lead to complications.

Short, controlled leash walks are usually acceptable after a few days, depending on the type of surgery. Always follow the specific guidelines provided at discharge, and when in doubt, give us a call before increasing your pet’s activity level.

Ensuring Proper Nutrition and Hydration

It’s normal for pets to have a reduced appetite after surgery, but they should still be drinking water and eating small amounts. If your pet refuses food for more than 24 hours or seems excessively lethargic, let us know.

For pets recovering from procedures involving the gastrointestinal system, a bland diet may be recommended. We’ll provide personalized feeding instructions based on your pet’s procedure and condition.

When to Call Us

You know your pet best, and if something seems off during their recovery, it’s always better to check in with us. Give us a call if you notice:

  • Persistent lethargy or weakness

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Excessive swelling, bleeding, or discharge from the incision

  • Signs of pain that aren’t improving
